The ALC was formed in 1994 to serve as a unified, national voice for professional loggers across the United States. Made up of a coalition of state and regional logging associations and councils, ALC represents more than 50,000 employees and reaches over 10,000 logging contractors. With the adoption of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) by the American Forest and Paper Association in 1994, it was clear that American Loggers needed a strong, consistent presence in order to impact issues on a national level. This coalescing event was, in effect, the beginning of the ALC. MISSION To enhance the logging profession, provide a unified voice on logging issues; and cooperate with public, industrial and private timberland owners to further sustainable forestry practices. GOAL The Council is committed to enhancing the logging profession, establishing a more level playing field for professional loggers and providing accurate information about the logging profession to the forest products companies, landowners and the public. It serves as a national network and communication center, linking local, state and regional organizations around the country.

At the Institute of Zoology research and teaching covers a broad spectrum of biological sciences, ranging from cell, developmental and neurobiology through genetics and evolution to behavioural biology and ecology. All of these areas are represented by internationally renowned groups. The recognition of the Institute of Zoology as “a world class research institute with an ambitious, modern teaching programme” by a 2005 panel of external experts motivates us to proceed on the adopted path. The next step on this path is the imminent hiring of two new professors, one for population genetics and the other for developmental biology. In both areas, we have excellent candidates who are able to complement our research and teaching program and to build bridges between established groups. The integration of molecular and organismic biology within the same institute not only opens new perspectives for innovative interdisciplinary research. It also allows for a well-coordinated curriculum that offers students of all levels a versatile education in individual disciplines and trains them to think in broader concepts. We complement our endeavour for diversity and coordination by intensive collaboration with other groups at the University of Zürich and the ETH that also work in the area of Life Sciences. The goal shared by all participants is the maintenance and further improvement of the high quality of the research and training environment in this field in Zurich.

Our vision Healthy, thriving native woodlands valued for their unique contribution to Scotland’s people, culture, economy and natural environment. Scottish Native Woods exists to rescue, restore and expand Scotland’s native (natural) woodlands. Long ago Scotland’s land area was virtually all forested. However, over the centuries all but 2% of this rich habitat has been destroyed by alternative land uses, and much of the remainder is still under threat. We work to bring these remaining native woods back into responsible management and to enlarge these areas through natural regeneration. Native Woodlands deliver many benefits to the nation as a whole, but particularly to native flora and fauna, including threatened species such as juniper, pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly, red squirrel and black grouse. Scotland is the stronghold of the UK’s most natural and extensive native woodland remnants many of which are of international significance. Native woodland restoration has a crucial role to play in sustainable development with the many benefits this represents to society. Scottish Native Woods is raising awareness and changing attitudes in order to protect our heritage. Scottish Native Woods is a Scottish recognised charity which champions the cause of native woodlands in Scotland and helps with the practical difficulties of managing and restoring native woodlands

CTHB research concentrates on the health of native trees, particularly those in forests and it has both a national and international perspective. A core focus is to provide the highest possible quality of post graduate education in fields such as plant pathology, entomology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology and ecology. The CTHB functions alongside the Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP), with the two programmes providing synergy for each other. The Centre of Excellence in Tree Health Biotechnology, one of seven research groups to have been allocated status and funding as centres of excellence, was officially launched on 31 January 2005.
